[WARDED PRIVATE: Narcissa]
Happy birthday, darling.

[WARDED PRIVATE]
Narcissa is sweeping through the house in a flurry of flower petals and muslin, and Merlin knows what else in preparation for tonight's dinner party. She's had the floral scheme, fabrics, and menu planned for ages and is now making sure every detail is precisely to her liking. That's Narcissa for you -- always the micromanager. It's amusing to watch her work. (I learned long ago that the only way I can be of use to her at such a time is by staying well out of the way, so I can't feel guilty about sitting by idly and observing her.) It's refreshing that she doesn't run around like a chicken with its head cut off as, I've heard, other society ladies are wont to do. She goes about her tasks calmly and gracefully. It's remarkable.

I'm sure she will enjoy entertaining her aunt and uncle Rosier, and we do always like to see the girls. Narcissa tells me that Glynnis's interest in Draco has blossomed after the successes of last Friday's shopping excursion, which does her great credit. I, for one, should like to have a follow-up discussion with Royden.

[WARDED PRIVATE: ROYDEN ROSIER]
I'm looking forward to seeing you and your family shortly.

[WARDED PRIVATE: RODOLPHUS]
What is the status of the Lestrange child? And how is Bellatrix? I hope that when this is all resolved, you and I will be able to concentrate on our previous assignment, especially where Meadows is concerned. I trust we will still be able to carry out the memory transfer?

[sent by one of the distinguished white Malfoy owls]

Mr. Rosier,

Narcissa and I would be delighted if you and your family would join us for dinner on Sunday evening. Let me know by Wednesday whether you will be available.

Warm regards,

Lucius Malfoy

Recent events have really been too unfortunate to bear. I speak particularly of the murder of Dion Fields. He was truly a talented and accomplished man, and his absence must be felt keenly throughout wizarding Britain. Narcissa and I, regrettably, were not able to attend his funeral, but we have been told that the event was conducted with dignity and respect. Precisely what Mr. Fields deserved, I daresay. On behalf of the Malfoy family, I would like to publically give my wholehearted support of Rufus Scrimgeour. He is more than capable of doing well in his new position. Congratulations, Mr. Scrimgeour.

[WARDED PRIVATE: RODOLPHUS]
Merlin, what rot. Job well done regarding Fields as far as I'm concerned. I've been meaning to owl informing you that my contact in Wizard Relations was more than willing to give me a few minutes with Meadowes's file. I've made copies, obviously, one of which is on its way to you. It's charmed to look like a recipe for beef stroganoff to anyone else who might come upon it, but I think you'll find that Bellatrix should be able to see it just fine, should you show it to her.

[WARDED PRIVATE: NARCISSA]
Dobby has been deeply apologetic about his, shall we say, shortcomings. As you know, I find his sniveling exhausting, so I've asked him to stay out of my way for the duration of the week, but I hope you will see an improvement in his behavior. If not, another dose of the hot poker should do the trick. Do let me know. In terms of our schedule, I shall meet you in Diagon Alley at noon tomorrow, and I trust we are still dining with your parents on Sunday? I thought you might have Mrs. Prentice for tea on Friday. I realise she's utterly tiresome, but the connection with her husband is a useful one which I would like to maintain. I'll take Draco with me in the afternoon, should you agree to this. I'll see you at supper, darling.

[sent by overnight owl, to be found on mr edward prentice's desk first thing in the morning]

Edward,

Narcissa begged me to write you, asking if you might permit her to throw a few small fundraisers to benefit Wizard Resources. She's been itching to do something for the department for weeks on end. She also hoped to have your wife to tea one afternoon this week. Do let me know if she would be available. On a similar note, I'd quite like to stop by the office myself. Would Monday afternoon be convenient for you? I shall hopefully see you then.

Warmest regards,

Lucius Malfoy

minutiae
NAME Lucius Abraxas Malfoy. As for nicknames – does he really strike you as the sort of man who goes by an adorable diminutive?
BIRTHDATE 23 April, 1954.
ASTROLOGY In this House, the traits associated with Taurus that will be most emphasized are materialism and loyalty. These Slytherins will be almost blindly loyal to their friends and allies, and they will value wealth and the trappings of wealth over more intangible assets. Determination will also be emphasized. All Slytherins are determined, but the stubborn Taurus Slytherin is unstoppable once they have their mind set on something. A large number of Slytheirns in this sign work for Gringotts after graduating from Hogwarts, for they are very good with money. +
BLOODLINE/SOCIAL STATUS Pure, obviously.
CLOSELY RESEMBLES Boyd Holbrook.

delving deeper
ALLEGIANCE It was perfectly natural for Lucius Malfoy to align himself with the Dark Lord rising. The cause was one with which he agreed wholeheartedly, and, moreover, he wished to be on the winning side of the rapidly brewing battle. To take the Dark Mark was a decision that came with relative ease. Though he could not rise through the ranks using his usual tactics (an outpouring of charm and money), Lucius managed to work his way into the inner sanctum solely by virtue of usefulness and loyalty. Though he paints himself as the Dark Lord's most faithful servant, Lucius, ever an opportunist, will continue to be faithful only so long as he stands to benefit. His deepest loyalty is, as ever, to his family. If his responsibilities as patriarch ever required him to forsake his master, he would do so in an instant. For now, however, the life of a Death Eater suits him and his close of kin rather well.

OCCUPATION The modern dandy. Lucius never has – and, for that matter, never will – toiled honestly in the traditional sense. And why should he? There was certainly never a need for an income. He lives what must be called a life of leisure, but despite this luxury, Lucius is far from idle. His days are spent carefully cultivating connections, rubbing shoulders, networking with the best of them. A brilliant manipulator of those in authority, Lucius knows that a few well-placed donations (to St. Mungo's, to the Prophet, to the Ministry itself) will prove to be worth their weight in Galleons. And, indeed, Lucius already has several choice officials in his pocket, wielding, through his influence, considerable power.
